The Season of Lent

The Season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, the same day as Valentine's Day this year. It lasts for 40 days. Placing ashes on the head was in Old Testament times a sign of grief and mourning, a symbolic telling of the words in Genesis: "Remember that you but dust and unto dust you will return." The season, however, no matter how sad or somber, is always dominated at every moment by the joyful expectation of Christ's Easter victory.

Lent is a season rich in mystery- it is not a gloomy time of "must-nots." It is a true springtime, a time of warm rain and green shoots and a calm acceptance that all things without exception will fall back into dust.

Do not be dismayed by the brokenness of the world. All things break. And things can be mended. Not with time, as they say, but with intention. So go. Love intentionally, extravagantly, unconditionally. The broken world waits in darkness for the light that is you.

(L. R. Knost)
